Renewing your IRP3 min readReviewed

How to renew your IRP online

Every IRP renewal is done online, on ISD's renewals portal, from 12 weeks before your card expires. It takes one form, a few uploads and usually a €300 fee, but a few avoidable mistakes get applications refused or stuck: applying too early, from abroad, before your permit or course is in place, or without a passport.

The short answer

  • Renew online, on ISD’s renewals portal (inisonline.jahs.ie). There’s no in-person option unless a Registration Officer tells you to attend.
  • Apply from 12 weeks before your card expires, while you’re in Ireland. Earlier applications are refused.
  • Upload your IRP card, your passport’s biometric page and the documents for your stamp, and pay €300 if it applies.
  • Keep the OREG acknowledgement email. It’s your proof that you applied in time.

Check you’re ready

Pick your stamp and enter your card’s expiry date to see what would hold your application up, and ISD’s current queue for your stamp.

What gets a renewal refused or stuck

Problem What ISD does What to do instead
Applying more than 12 weeks before expiry Refuses it Wait until your window opens
Applying from outside Ireland Doesn’t accept it Apply once you’re back, before your card expires
A permit-based renewal without a valid employment permit Refuses it Get the renewed permit from DETE first
A student renewal before the course starts Doesn’t accept it Apply once your course has started
No passport, and no new one applied for Needs a valid identity document Apply for a new passport, then upload the embassy’s confirmation
Missing or unreadable documents Asks for more by email Upload them in the portal within 14 days
A pending proposal to deport, or a deportation order Refuses it Get advice

Before you start

  • Your IRP card: a copy of the front and back.
  • Your passport: the biometric page. If it has expired or is lost, your embassy’s confirmation that you’ve applied for a new one.
  • The documents for your stamp on ISD’s required documents list, for example your employment permit, college letter or marriage certificate, and private medical insurance if yours needs it.
  • Digital copies: scans or photos are fine, but every word must be readable.
  • A credit or debit card for the fee, if you pay one.

Step by step

  1. Log in or create an account on ISD’s renewals portal, inisonline.jahs.ie. It’s a different site from the Customer Service Portal you use for queries.
  2. Choose the Registration Renewal form and begin your application.
  3. Fill it in, including the declaration that you’re applying from Ireland. If you’re changing stamp category, for example from Stamp 2 to graduate Stamp 1G, include the documents that support the change.
  4. Upload your documents.
  5. Pay the fee, if it applies.
  6. Submit. ISD emails an acknowledgement with your OREG number and payment receipt.

Each person applies separately, including family members.

After you submit

  • In the queue. ISD processes applications in date order for each stamp category and publishes the dates it’s working on, updated weekly. The check above uses its table of 28 September 2026.
  • If ISD needs more. It emails you. Log in to the renewals portal, go to My Forms, open the form under Additional Information Required, upload what’s listed in the Further information Required box and submit. Don’t send documents by post or through the Customer Service Portal. You have 14 days, and there’s no extra fee.
  • The decision. If it’s approved, ISD emails you. If it’s refused, ISD tells you why and returns the fee.
  • Your new card arrives by post within about 15 business days of approval.

While you wait, you can usually keep working and travel, with conditions.

Passport problems

If your passport has expired or been lost, you can still renew once you’ve applied for a new one: upload your embassy’s confirmation. ISD will likely give you a shorter permission, and the rest once your new passport arrives. If you already have a new passport, include it in your renewal.

Common mix-ups

Common questions

How do I renew my IRP?

Online only, on ISD's renewals portal at inisonline.jahs.ie. Log in or create an account, choose the Registration Renewal form, fill it in, upload your documents, pay the fee if it applies, and submit. ISD emails an acknowledgement with your OREG number.

How early can I renew my IRP?

From 12 weeks before your card expires. Applications submitted earlier are refused. Students on Stamp 2 must also wait until their course has started.

Will ISD remind me to renew?

No. ISD doesn't send reminders: keeping track of your expiry date is up to you.

Can I renew my IRP from outside Ireland?

No. You must be in Ireland when you apply, and you declare this on the form.

Can I renew before my employment permit is renewed?

No. If your permission is based on an employment permit, you need a valid, in-date permit from DETE first. Renewals without one are refused.

My passport has expired or is lost. Can I still renew?

Yes, if you've applied for a new one. Upload your embassy's confirmation of the application. You'll likely get a shorter permission, and the rest once your new passport arrives.
