The short answer
- You can often change your permission from inside Ireland, but only while it’s still valid. ISD won’t change an expired one.
- Most changes are made online through ISD’s portal (inisonline.jahs.ie). A few need a form, a postal application, or an employment permit first.
- Applying doesn’t extend your current permission, so apply in plenty of time.
- Visitors and people on a Working Holiday Authorisation can’t change: they leave and apply from outside, apart from a few family routes.

Stamp change finder
Whether you can switch from inside Ireland, to which stamp, and how.
From ISD’s change of permission, renewal, family and student pages, and the Department of Justice for the Temporary Protection Transition Scheme. ISD decides every application; your permission letter always takes priority.
The ground rules
- Your permission must be valid. If it’s out of date, ISD says you can’t apply to change it.
- Applying doesn’t extend it. You stay on your current conditions until ISD decides.
- Changes are online. ISD’s registration FAQ says renewals and stamp changes are made by online application only, unless a Registration Officer asks you to attend.
- Tell ISD about changes. A new job or other changed registration details must be reported within 7 days.
- ISD decides each case. Your new permission letter sets your conditions.
What ISD allows from each stamp
| You’re on | You can move to | How |
|---|---|---|
| Stamp 1 | Stamp 2 to study; Stamp 1G or 3 as a dependant or de facto partner of a resident; Stamp 4 as the spouse, de facto partner or parent of an Irish citizen, or after 21 or 57 months on a permit; Stamp 5 after 8 years | Online; Long Term Residency by post |
| Stamp 1G graduate | Stamp 1 once you have an employment permit | Online, with the permit |
| Stamp 1G partner or child | Stamp 4 after 5 years as a dependant, or sooner if your sponsor becomes Irish | Online, at your next renewal |
| Stamp 2 | Stamp 1 with an employment permit; Stamp 1G as a graduate; Stamp 1G or 3 as a dependant; Stamp 4 through an Irish spouse, partner or child | Online |
| Stamp 3 | Stamp 1 with an employment permit; Stamp 2 to study; Stamp 4 through Irish family; Stamp 5 after 8 years | Online; Stamp 5 by application to ISD |
| Stamp 4 | Stamp 5 after 8 years. A move to Stamp 1, 2 or 3 is “not applicable” | Application to ISD |
| Temporary protection | Stamp 4 under the Temporary Protection Transition Scheme | Online, by 30 March 2027 |
| Visitor or working holiday | Nothing from inside Ireland, apart from some Irish family routes | Leave and apply from outside |
Work changes
- Stamp 2 or 3 to Stamp 1: once the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment issues an employment permit, apply to ISD to change to Stamp 1.
- Stamp 2 to Stamp 1G: with an Irish award at level 8 or higher, apply online within 6 months of your final results.
- Stamp 1G graduate to Stamp 1: get the permit before your Stamp 1G ends. ISD says it doesn’t generally extend Stamp 1G to allow for a late permit application.
- Stamp 1 to Stamp 4: after 21 months on a Critical Skills permit or 57 on a General Employment permit, you renew online on Stamp 4 conditions.
- A new employer on Stamp 1 isn’t a change of stamp: your new employer needs a new employment permit, and you tell ISD about the new job.
Family changes
| What changed | New stamp | Who can apply from inside Ireland |
|---|---|---|
| You married, or entered a civil partnership with, an Irish citizen | Stamp 4 | People with a current, registered permission, online. People who came on a C visa or have no permission use the Spouse of Irish National form |
| Your child is an Irish citizen | Stamp 4 | Anyone on Stamp 1, 2, 3 or 4, online (€300 fee). Others use the parent of an Irish citizen child form |
| You’ve lived with an Irish partner for 2+ years | Stamp 4 | Most people with a current permission, online; not visitors, working holiday makers or protection applicants |
| You’ve lived with a partner on Stamp 1, 4 or 5 for 2+ years | Stamp 1G or 3 | As above |
| You want to become a dependant of family here | Stamp 1G or 3 | Anyone on Stamp 1, 2, 3 or 4, online (€300 fee). Others use the Family Dependent form |
Partners of employment permit holders get Stamp 1G, which lets you work. Family of Stamp 4 or 5 holders not covered by another category get Stamp 3, which doesn’t. Sponsors on Stamp 2 or 3 can’t sponsor.
After temporary protection
The Temporary Protection Transition Scheme opened on 30 September 2026 for people on temporary protection who want to stay. You apply online by 30 March 2027, and each family member applies. You need:
- at least 1 year here on temporary protection by 30 September 2026;
- 6 months of employment or self-employment by then, at €29,432 a year or more;
- to not be living in State-supported accommodation when you apply.
It’s a Stamp 4 permission for up to 2 years, renewable, and the Department of Justice says it counts towards naturalisation. Once you’re approved, your temporary protection ends and you register within 90 days. If you’re refused, you keep temporary protection (extended in Ireland to 4 March 2027; the EU Directive runs to 4 March 2028), and you can appeal within 30 working days. Check if you qualify in our temporary protection guide.
Long stays
- Stamp 4 after 21 or 57 months on employment permits.
- Long Term Residency: after 60 months on employment permits, you can apply by post for 5 more years of work without a permit. The permission fee is €500, on top of the registration fee.
- Stamp 5: after 8 years (96 months) of residence on stamps that count, you can apply to ISD for permission without condition as to time. It isn’t possible straight from Stamp 2.
Common mix-ups
Common questions
Can I change my stamp without leaving Ireland?
Often, yes. If you hold a valid permission, ISD lets you apply to change it in many situations, mostly through its online portal, for example from Stamp 2 to Stamp 1 with an employment permit, or to Stamp 4 as the spouse of an Irish citizen. Visitors and Working Holiday Authorisation holders can't change, and an expired permission can't be changed.
Does applying to change my stamp extend my permission?
No. ISD says submitting an application doesn't extend your current permission, so apply in plenty of time.
How do I apply to change my stamp?
Through ISD's online portal at inisonline.jahs.ie for most changes, uploading the documents for the new permission. Some need a separate application form through the Customer Service Portal, Long Term Residency is by post, and moving to Stamp 1 needs an employment permit from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment first.
Can I switch from a visitor visa to a student or work permission?
No. ISD says visitors must leave by the end of their permission and apply from outside Ireland, and a short stay C visa can't be transferred to student permission. The exceptions are the spouse of an Irish citizen and the parent of an Irish citizen child routes, which take applications from people who came on a C visa.
I'm on Stamp 2 and got a job. Can I move to Stamp 1?
Yes, once the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment issues your employment permit. You then apply to ISD online to change to Stamp 1.
My permission has expired. Can I still change it?
No, ISD says you can't change a permission that is out of date. The spouse of an Irish national, parent of an Irish citizen child and family dependant routes have separate application forms for people without a current permission. Otherwise, get advice.
What is the Temporary Protection Transition Scheme?
A Stamp 4 permission for people on temporary protection, open until 30 March 2027. You need a year here on temporary protection and six months' work at €29,432 a year or more, both by 30 September 2026, and you can't be in State-supported accommodation. It lasts up to 2 years, is renewable, and counts towards naturalisation.
