Got a new passport? Updating your details with ISD

When you get a new passport, tell ISD with a query on the Customer Service Portal. The law gives you 7 days. If you need to renew before it arrives, your embassy's confirmation is enough to apply, and the rest of your permission can be added later.

The short answer

  • Got a new passport? Tell ISD with a query on the Customer Service Portal. Your passport details are part of your registration, and the law gives you 7 days to report a change.
  • Need to renew before it arrives? Apply with your embassy’s confirmation that you’ve applied. You’ll likely get a shorter permission, and the rest is added once the passport comes.
  • Permission cut to your old passport’s expiry? With the new passport, you can renew for longer.
  • Old stamps? Nothing to move: a valid IRP card replaces passport stamps.

Telling ISD about your new passport

      1. Log in to the Customer Service Portal and click Submit Query on your dashboard.
      2. Choose Registration & Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Cards, then My circumstances have changed, then “I have obtained a new passport”.
      3. Give your new passport details, for example with a copy of the biometric page: the page with your photo, passport number and date of birth.

ISD’s FAQ says you’re legally required to give it renewed passport details. The Immigration Act 2004 lists passport details among the particulars you register, and any change to them has to be reported within 7 days.

If your permission was cut to your old passport’s expiry

ISD says your permission isn’t linked to your passport’s expiry. But if it would have run past the date your passport expired, ISD may register you only up to that date. Once you have a new passport, you can renew for longer.

You can apply to renew from 12 weeks before your card expires, online, with a copy of the new passport’s biometric page. ISD refuses applications sent earlier than that.

Renewing while you wait for a passport

You need a valid identity document to renew. If your new passport hasn’t come yet:

      1. Apply to renew online, and upload your embassy’s confirmation that you’ve applied, such as the email acknowledging your application.
      2. ISD will likely grant a limited-length permission.
      3. When the passport arrives, contact ISD through the portal to update your recent application and ask for the remainder of your permission. The closest topic is Online Renewal Applications, then “I wish to add documents to or update my application”.
      4. ISD then issues a new IRP card with the corrected end date.

      Your old stamps

Passports are only stamped at a first registration, in place of a first IRP card. ISD says a valid IRP card replaces any need for passport stamps, and airlines accept it as proof of your permission. There’s nothing to transfer to the new passport.

      Common mix-ups

      Common questions

Do I have to tell ISD about my new passport?

Yes. ISD says you're legally required to give it your new passport details. Under the Immigration Act 2004, changes to your registered details are due within 7 days.

      How do I tell ISD?

Submit a query on the Customer Service Portal: Registration & Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Cards, then My circumstances have changed, then “I have obtained a new passport”.

My IRP card ends when my old passport expired. Why?

Your permission isn't linked to your passport, but if it would have ended after your passport expired, ISD may register you only up to the passport's expiry. Once you have a new passport, you can renew for longer.

I've lost my passport. Can I renew my IRP without it?

Not with nothing: ISD needs proof of a valid identity document for every renewal. But once you've applied for a new passport, upload your embassy's confirmation of the application and you can renew online, usually for a shorter period until the new passport arrives.

Can I renew my permission while I wait for a new passport?

Yes. Upload your embassy's confirmation that you've applied, such as its acknowledgement email. ISD will likely give you a shorter permission, and the rest once the new passport arrives.

How do I get the rest of my permission once the passport arrives?

Contact ISD through the Customer Service Portal to update your recent application with the new passport details and ask for the remainder of your permission. ISD then issues a new IRP card with the corrected end date.

Do I need the stamps from my old passport moved to the new one?

No. Passports are only stamped at a first registration, and ISD says a valid IRP card replaces any need for passport stamps, including for airlines.

Should I post my passport to ISD?

No. ISD says never to send your passport by post unless a registration officer tells you to. For online renewals, ISD asks for a copy of the biometric page instead.
