The short answer
- Everyone uploads the biometric page of their passport, the front and back of their IRP card, and proof of address.
- Workers add their permit and a payslip from the last 3 months. Students add their college letter, fees, exam results and private medical insurance: travel insurance isn’t enough when you renew.
- Family members add proof of the relationship and their sponsor’s passport or permit.
- Scans or photos are fine, as long as every word is readable.

Things that trip people up
- Insurance at renewal. Students on Stamp 2 and 2A, graduates on Stamp 1G and people on Stamp 3 need private medical insurance covering accidents and hospital stays. Travel insurance is only accepted at first registration.
- Recent dates. Payslips and employer letters must be from the last 3 months.
- Your permit first. On a permit, the permit itself must be valid before you renew.
- English language students need a letter showing 85% attendance and their exam results.
- Moves that only happen at renewal, such as Stamp 4 after a permit, graduate Stamp 1G and Stamp 4 after 5 years as a partner, have their own lists.
- Partners on Stamp 1G upload their partner’s passport page, IRP card and permit too.
- Working holidays can’t be renewed, and Stamp 6 needs no registration or renewal.
The fee
Renewing costs €300, paid by card when you submit, except for:
- under-18s;
- spouses and civil partners of Irish citizens;
- family of EU, EEA and Swiss citizens with an EU residence card, and Withdrawal Agreement beneficiaries;
- refugees, and people with subsidiary protection or permission to remain;
- family reunified with a refugee, and temporary protection beneficiaries;
- people granted a change of permission because of domestic abuse, and a few others.
Common mix-ups
Common questions
What documents do I need to renew my IRP?
The biometric page of your passport, the front and back of your current IRP card, proof of your address, and the documents ISD lists for your permission, for example your employment permit and a recent payslip, or your college letter, fees and insurance.
Do I need originals to renew my IRP?
No. Online renewals use scanned copies or photos, as long as every word is readable.
Is travel insurance enough to renew a student permission?
No. When you renew Stamp 2, Stamp 2A or graduate Stamp 1G, ISD asks for private medical insurance covering accidents and hospital stays for your whole stay. Travel insurance is only accepted at first registration.
What do I need to renew on Stamp 1 with an employment permit?
Your passport, IRP card and proof of address, plus your employment permit and proof of your current job, such as a payslip from the last 3 months. Your permit must be valid before you apply.
What do I need to move from Stamp 1 to Stamp 4?
Your permits or hosting agreements, your most recent payslip, a letter from your employer from the last 3 months with your job title, location and dates, and Revenue's Employment Detail Summary for each year on the permit.
Who doesn't pay the renewal fee?
Under-18s, spouses and civil partners of Irish citizens, family of EU citizens with an EU residence card, refugees, people with subsidiary protection or permission to remain, family reunified with a refugee, temporary protection beneficiaries, and some others. Everyone else pays €300.
