Stamp 3 explained

Stamp 3 is permission to live in Ireland for a set period without paid work or a business, apart from the role it was granted for, such as a minister of religion. Volunteers, ministers of religion and some family members get it, and the time counts towards citizenship.

Volunteers

ISD’s volunteer scheme lets you volunteer with an eligible organisation for up to 2 years, with the possibility of a third. You apply for a visa or preclearance before you travel. You can’t:

  • do paid work of any kind;
  • bring family members;
  • change your immigration permission while you’re here;
  • change organisation more than once in any 12 months;
  • rely on public services or claim benefits.

Ministers of religion

Ministers of religion with an eligible religious body or faith community can stay 1 year at first, up to 3 years, and usually get one extension of 3 more years with the same sponsor. You can do voluntary work and study alongside your role, but no other paid work. Your spouse or partner and children under 18 can come with you, but their permission depends on yours: if you leave Ireland, they must leave too.

Family members on Stamp 3

ISD’s family reunification policy gives Stamp 3 to the families of:

  • Stamp 4 and Stamp 5 holders who aren’t covered by another category, for example people on Stamp 4 for their own long residence;
  • ministers of religion.

After at least 5 years as a dependant, or sooner if your sponsor becomes an Irish citizen, ISD’s policy says you can apply for Stamp 4 at your next online renewal.

Registering and renewing

ISD’s required documents for Stamp 3:

  • the biometric page of your passport;
  • your permission letter from the Department of Justice, with your conditions;
  • volunteers and ministers: your letter of sponsorship;
  • private medical insurance. Travel insurance works only for your first registration;
  • to renew: the front and back of your current IRP card too.

ISD's family reunification policy says spouses, partners and children can apply for Stamp 4 at their next renewal after at least 5 years as a dependant, or sooner if the sponsor becomes an Irish citizen.
