The short answer
- A mistake on your card: send a query on the Customer Service Portal with full details. If ISD agrees, it posts you a replacement card.
- A wrong passport stamp from your first registration: send a query, and ISD may give you an appointment to fix it.
- A card that ends with your old passport isn’t an error. Send your new passport and ask for the rest of your permission.
- A mistake in a renewal you’ve sent: fix it with a query, quoting your OREG number.
- Don’t renew again to fix a card, and check the card as soon as it arrives.

The query to send ISD, what to say, and what happens next.
What to attach
On the Customer Service Portal: Submit Query, then Registration & Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Cards, then the sub-category and topic above.
From ISD’s registration FAQ and query categories. Nothing you enter is sent or saved. ISD decides each case.
Which query to send
All of these are under Registration & Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Cards when you click Submit Query on the Customer Service Portal.
| The problem | Sub-category | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| An error on your new IRP card | Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Cards | I have received my new IRP card, but it contains an error |
| A wrong passport stamp from a first registration | First Time Registrations Appointments | There is an error on a passport stamp that I have received |
| Documents missing or wrong in a renewal | Online Renewal Applications | I wish to add documents to or update my application |
| You moved after sending a renewal | Online Renewal Applications | I have changed my home address since submitting an application online |
| You want to cancel a renewal | Online Renewal Applications | I wish to cancel an application that I have submitted |
| You paid a fee you didn’t owe | Online Renewal Applications | I require a refund of fees paid |
| A new passport | My circumstances have changed | I have obtained a new passport |
The right topic gets your query to the right team. A clear query says what’s wrong, what it should say, and gives your application number if you have one.
Errors on the card
Check your card the day it arrives: your name, date of birth, nationality, stamp and expiry date.
- Your personal details: compare them with your passport. The card should match it. If the passport itself is wrong, that’s for the country that issued it.
- Your stamp or expiry date: compare them with ISD’s approval email or letter. An end date that matches your old passport’s expiry is ISD’s rule, not a mistake (see below).
- Then send the query, with a clear copy of the card and your passport’s photo page. If ISD agrees, it corrects the error and posts a replacement card to your home address.
ISD doesn’t mention a fee for correcting an error on a card, or how long the corrected card takes. A new card normally arrives within 15 business days of approval.
A card that ends with your old passport
If your passport was due to expire before your permission, ISD may register you only up to the passport’s expiry. That’s not a mistake on the card. Once you have a new passport, contact ISD on the portal to update your recent application with it and ask for the rest of your permission. ISD then issues a new card with the corrected end date.
A wrong stamp in your passport
Passports are stamped only at a first registration at Burgh Quay, to prove your permission until the card arrives. If the stamp is wrong, send a query: ISD investigates and, if it agrees, gives you an in-person appointment to fix it. Don’t go to Burgh Quay without one: you won’t be let in. Once your IRP card arrives, it replaces any stamp, so check the card for the same error.
Mistakes in a renewal you’ve sent
You fix these with a query too, giving the OREG number from ISD’s acknowledgement email.
- A missing or wrong document: add it with a query. If ISD asks you for documents, reply within 14 days, or it refuses and closes the application.
- A new address: tell ISD, because it posts your card to the address it has.
- The fee: if you sent it as fee waived but should pay, ISD refuses it for non-payment and you apply again, paying the €300. If you paid but shouldn’t have, ask for a refund.
Travelling while it’s fixed
ISD warns that a card with a significant error may not be accepted by airlines or at the border.
- You need a visa to enter Ireland: ask for an emergency re-entry visa on the portal, before you go, with your flight booking. You can’t ask from abroad.
- You don’t need a visa: ISD says you can travel and ask for entry at the border without a valid IRP card.
- Either way, your permission must last until you come back.
Details that change later
The law gives you 7 days to tell ISD when your registered details change, such as your passport or your name. For a new passport, use “I have obtained a new passport”. ISD lists no topic for a change of name on its own: usually it comes with a new passport in your new name, so send that.
Common mix-ups
Common questions
There's a mistake on my new IRP card. What should I do?
Submit a query on the Customer Service Portal: Registration & Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Cards, then Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Cards, then “I have received my new IRP card, but it contains an error”. Give full details of the error. If ISD agrees, it corrects it and posts a replacement card to your home address.
The stamp in my passport from my first registration is wrong. What do I do?
Submit a query under First Time Registrations Appointments, then “There is an error on a passport stamp that I have received”. ISD investigates and, if it agrees, gives you an in-person appointment to fix it.
My IRP card ends when my old passport expired. Is that a mistake?
No. ISD may register you only up to your passport's expiry, even if your permission would run longer. Once you have a new passport, ask ISD on the portal to update your recent application and add the rest of your permission. It then issues a new card with the corrected end date.
Is there a fee to correct my IRP card?
ISD's guidance on cards with errors doesn't mention one. It decides each request and will tell you if anything is needed.
Can I travel with a mistake on my IRP card?
ISD warns that a significant error may not be accepted by airlines or at the border. If you need a visa to enter Ireland, ask for an emergency re-entry visa on the portal before you go. If you don't, ISD says you can travel and ask for entry at the border without a valid card. Either way, your permission must last until you come back.
I made a mistake in a renewal I've already sent. Can I change it?
Yes, with a query under Online Renewal Applications: to add or change documents, to give a new address, or to cancel the application. Include your application number (OREG) from ISD's acknowledgement email.
I sent my renewal as fee waived, but I should have paid. What now?
ISD refuses it for non-payment, and you have to apply again and pay. Check your date of birth and permission type first: a mistake there hides the payment step. Renewals count from your current expiry date, so applying again doesn't cost you time.
I changed my name. How do I update my IRP card?
Your name is a registered detail, and the law gives you 7 days to tell ISD about changes. ISD lists no query topic for a name change on its own. Usually it comes with a new passport in your new name, so send that as “I have obtained a new passport”.
