How to book a Burgh Quay registration appointment

Everyone registering for the first time books an appointment at ISD's Registration Office in Burgh Quay, through the Customer Service Portal. It's free, you book it yourself once you've arrived, and if the earliest date is after your 90 days, booking in time is enough.

Before you start

You can book once you have:

  1. arrived in Ireland, with a stamp in your passport telling you to register within 90 days;
  2. a Customer Service Portal account at portal.irishimmigration.ie. Setting one up needs:
    • one email address (you can only register one, so use it for everything);
    • a mobile phone with the Microsoft Authenticator app, for a code each time you sign in;
    • an ID-Pal check: you scan an ID document and your face with your phone. A passport, driving licence, national ID card, travel document, Public Service Card, residence permit or IPO blue card works;
  3. the permission you’re registering, for example Stamp 1 for work or Stamp 2 for study.

Practise first

Go through the questions the portal asks. You’ll see where to stop if booking isn’t the right step for you, and what happens after you book.

Booking, step by step

On the Customer Service Portal:

  1. Choose First Time Registration Appointment.
  2. Select the county you live in. Burgh Quay in Dublin is the registration office for the whole country.
  3. Say whether you have temporary protection under the EU Temporary Protection Directive.
  4. Say whether this is your first time registering. If you’ve had an Irish IRP card before, answer no: you renew online instead, on the Online Form Portal.
  5. Choose the permission you’re registering.
  6. For some permissions, choose whether you’re booking for yourself or as a family, and how many are coming.
  7. Pick a date and time. You get a confirmation email.

To change or cancel, go to Registration on the portal.

When to book

As soon as you arrive. You can’t book before you’re in Ireland, and slots fill quickly.

  • Slots are released on a rolling 90-day basis, and ISD adds more when it can.
  • You can reschedule to any free date, at any time. If you booked a later date, keep checking for an earlier one.
  • If the earliest slot is after your 90 days, ISD says not to worry: a booking made within 90 days of arriving is enough to stay until the appointment.
  • If you need a visa to come to Ireland, don’t leave before your appointment: you’d need a new visa to get back in.

If your situation is urgent, you can ask for an emergency first-time appointment through a query on the portal (Registration & IRP Cards, then First Time Registrations Appointments). You need evidence to support it.

Who books

  • Everyone 16 or over books their own appointment, in their own name. If the name doesn’t match the person who turns up, the appointment won’t go ahead, and you can’t use a friend’s or relative’s slot.
  • Family groups: under family reunification, a sponsor can book one appointment for the family group.
  • Children under 16 don’t register, so you don’t book for them. They register as soon as they turn 16. A guardian of a 16 or 17-year-old student goes to the appointment with them.
  • De facto partners can only register on that basis if they came with a visa or preclearance for it. Otherwise, they apply for the permission first.

On the day

Bring your passport, the documents for your permission and a card for the fee: up to €300, depending on your permission. Check in at the kiosk for a ticket. An immigration officer reviews your documents and takes your photo and fingerprints. ISD’s registration FAQ says it should take no longer than 60 minutes (an older ISD page says 30), and your IRP card comes by post. You can bring a friend to help translate, and your children if you don’t have childcare. Burgh Quay only handles registration, by appointment. You can’t walk in, and staff can’t help with other immigration matters: those go through a query on the portal.

Common mix-ups

Common questions

Where do I book a Burgh Quay appointment?

Only on ISD's Customer Service Portal, at portal.irishimmigration.ie. Appointments can't be booked through anyone else.

Can I book before I arrive in Ireland?

No. ISD says you book after you arrive, once your passport has been stamped and you've been told to register. Book as soon as you can after that.

What if there's no appointment within my 90 days?

ISD says not to worry. If you book within 90 days of arriving, that's enough to stay until your appointment date. Keep checking for an earlier slot, because you can reschedule to any free date at any time.

Does it cost anything to book?

No. Booking is free. You may pay a registration fee of up to €300 at the appointment itself, depending on your permission.

Can I book for my partner or child?

Everyone 16 or over books their own appointment, in their own name. For some permissions, a sponsor can book a family appointment under family reunification. Children under 16 don't register.

Can I get an earlier appointment?

Slots are released on a rolling 90-day basis, and ISD adds more when it can, so check back and reschedule. If it's urgent, you can ask for an emergency first-time appointment through a query on the portal, with evidence.

Can I just turn up at Burgh Quay?

No. You need a confirmed appointment in your own name, or to have been directed there by ISD. Staff there only deal with registration.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. ISD says you can bring a friend to help translate, and your children if you don't have childcare.
